Evaluation by American Advisors of ARVN 5 Infantry Division

- 7 February 1970: 2nd Battalion, 8th Regiment - Maj. Ly Sio Cong, DOR 1-6-60, 16 years service. Maj. Cong is an average commander. He is described as steady and reliable.

- June 1970: The 2/8 is presently in the process of a change of command. Major Cong has been the commander of this very steady, reliable battalion which has become the best battalion in the Regiment during the months of April and May. Major Cong's leadership was characterized by tight command and control, a low rate of desertions and AWOLS, low friendly casualties and a good body count ratio. He looked after his troops and the morale of the battalion was always excellent. The change of commanders at this point is unfortunate because the unit will undoubtedly experience a let-down until the new commander takes hold The unit is combat effective and dependable and hopefully with the proper leadership it should not lose too much of its momentum.
